Efficacy of 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) solution as endodontic irrigant has been tested. It was reported as a comparatively more efficient antimicrobial agent than a 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate solution. It has been proposed as a tissue solvent. It has bactericidal properties. The effect of time and storage conditions on the tissue-dissolving capacity of various concentrations of NaOCl has been evaluated. NaOCl is commonly used for the removal of the bloom-forming of biofouling organisms. It has been proposed as an algicidal agent.
